NBA-YLF JUSTICE PROJECT: NBA-YLF Ondo Branch Visits Segede Correctional Centre, Offers Legal Aid To Indigent Inmates

In a remarkable demonstration of legal advocacy and social responsibility, the Young Lawyers Forum (YLF) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ondo Branch, visited the Segede Correctional Centre in Ondo Town on February 28, 2025, as part of the nationwide NBA-YLF Justice Project.
The visit, led by the branch Chairman, Ayomiposi S. Akinola, focused on assessing the conditions of inmates, particularly those awaiting trial, and providing much-needed legal assistance. The lawyers also donated essential relief materials, including toiletries, to improve the welfare of the inmates.
During the outreach, members of the YLF engaged correctional officials to gain insights into the challenges faced by inmates. The team conducted interviews with 70 inmates, uncovering that about 60 of them were awaiting trial without legal representation. Recognizing the urgent need for legal intervention, the YLF pledged to take up their cases pro bono. Additionally, 10 convicted inmates with lesser options for fines were also interviewed as part of efforts to explore possible legal remedies.
This initiative aligns with the NBA-YLF’s commitment to promoting access to justice for indigent persons and ensuring that no one is denied legal representation due to financial constraints. Speaking on the impact of the visit, Ayomiposi Akinola reiterated the forum’s dedication to justice and legal advocacy, emphasising that such interventions would continue in the future.
The NBA-YLF Justice Project, a nationwide initiative of the Young Lawyers Forum, aims to provide legal support to indigent persons, especially those in correctional facilities, as a way of demonstrating love and service to society. The Ondo Branch’s participation in this project highlights its commitment to defending the rights of the underprivileged and promoting justice for all.
