NBA Yenagoa Explains Delay in Trial of Patience Jonathan’s Domestic Staff

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa Branch, has clarified the reason behind the prolonged trial of 13 domestic staff of former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, who have remained in custody at Okaka Correctional Centre since 2019.
Capital Offence Trial Stalls Due to Incomplete Legal Representation
NBA Yenagoa Chairman, Mr. Somina Johnbull, said capital punishment cases require full legal representation before proceedings can begin.
He expressed concern that not all counsels have consistently appeared in court, causing delays in the high-profile trial.
Court Offers to Recuse, Defendants Request Continuation
Johnbull revealed that in April, the presiding court offered to step down due to public sensationalism surrounding the case.
However, the defendants urged the court to continue, citing their trust in the judicial process.
NBA Decries Prolonged Trial Despite Technological Advancements
The NBA criticized the prolonged nature of the trial despite the availability of modern court facilities, including electronic recording systems.
Johnbull described it as strange and unacceptable for a case of such magnitude to drag on in Bayelsa State.
Osinbajo to Deliver Keynote at NBA Law Week
Meanwhile, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will headline the 2025 NBA Yenagoa Law Week with a keynote address.
Johnbull said Osinbajo was chosen for his exceptional public speaking and policy expertise across Africa.
Focus on Law, Leadership, and Development
The plenary session, themed “Driving Governance, Leadership and Development Through Law,” will explore legal solutions to Nigeria’s leadership crisis.
Johnbull noted that the session will offer practical insights into governance models that promote development and good leadership.
The NBA urges consistent court attendance to ensure justice in the high-profile case.
