NBA Women Forum Calls For Thorough Investigation Into Allegations Against Senators Akpabio And Akpoti-Uduaghan

The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF) in a statement signed by Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim, (Chairperson) has expressed deep concern over allegations of inappropriate behaviour involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
As the representative body for female legal practitioners in Nigeria, the NBAWF affirms that every Nigerian has the right to personal dignity, self-respect, and protection from harassment, as enshrined in the Constitution. While recognizing that allegations remain mere claims until proven through due process, the Forum emphasizes the need for a transparent and thorough investigation.
It is understood that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s initial petition was not considered by the Senate due to procedural and technical reasons, prompting her to submit a fresh petition. The NBAWF has been closely monitoring the situation and insists that the allegations, particularly those related to sexual harassment, must not be dismissed without proper investigation. The Forum warns that failure to address such claims could set a dangerous precedent, potentially affecting the handling of similar cases in the future.
The NBAWF asserts that an independent investigation serves the interests of both Senator Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan—allowing the former to clear his name and the latter to substantiate her claims. The Forum further urges the Senate to ensure a fair and impartial inquiry to maintain public confidence in the institution and reinforce its commitment to justice and gender equality.
In response, the NBAWF has established a Monitoring Committee to oversee the proceedings and ensure transparency in the investigation. The Forum calls on the National Assembly to uphold the integrity of the Senate by fostering a workplace where all individuals, regardless of gender, are treated with dignity and respect.
