NBA-WF Conference: Folashade Alli, SAN Says 35 Women SANs Out Of 720 Unacceptable
Mrs. Folashade Alli (SAN), chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBA WF) Conference Planning Committee, has expressed strong disapproval over the low representation of women among Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).
During a briefing on the upcoming annual conference in Lagos, Alli emphasized that having only 35 women out of 720 SANs was unacceptable and highlighted the urgent need to empower more women in the legal profession to address this glaring gender disparity.
The conference, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, aims to address gender disparities under the theme “Beyond the balance sheet: Redefining success for women in law.”
Alli underscored the significance of empowering women lawyers to achieve greater success, stating that the legal profession’s gender gap must be addressed promptly.
She remarked, “If you look at the legal profession, there are about 720 SANs, and less than 35 are women, which is 4.2 per cent. That’s the gender disparity we’re talking about, and that’s why we’re clamoring for gender equality.”
Highlighting the broader societal implications, Alli pointed out the absence of a female president or vice president in governance despite women constituting approximately 49 per cent of the population.
Addressing the rejection of the Gender Bill, she stressed the importance of affirmative action to promote gender equality.
Alli emphasized the NBA WF’s commitment to advocating for women’s rights and ensuring their active participation in legal leadership roles.
The conference, which will feature around 30 speakers, aims to redefine success for women lawyers beyond financial metrics. It will include six plenary sessions and attract delegates from across the federation.
Chinyere Okorocha, NBA WF Chairperson, explained that the chosen theme aimed to broaden the understanding of success for female lawyers, encompassing leadership, mentorship, and financial achievements.
Distinguished speakers, including Mrs. Bolanle Austen-Peters and Dr. Olasupo Olusi, are set to contribute to the discussions. A dinner and gala night chaired by Mrs. Funke Adekoya (SAN) will provide further networking opportunities.
The forum, through various initiatives such as seminars, workshops, and mentorship programs, seeks to empower female lawyers and overcome obstacles like family obligations and cultural biases.
Registration for the conference is ongoing, with discounted rates secured for delegates, and shuttle services arranged for speakers. Interested participants can register through the NBA WF website.
The briefing concluded with updates from other committee heads, reaffirming the forum’s dedication to empowering Nigerian female lawyers and advocating for gender equality within the legal sector.
