NBA Remuneration Committee Urges Enugu Assembly To Align New Bill With Legal Practitioners’ Remuneration Order

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Remuneration Committee has formally requested the Enugu State House of Assembly to incorporate the provisions of the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order 2023 into its proposed bill addressing pegging agents, legal fees, and the elimination of caution fees.
In a letter signed by Chief Emeka Obegolu, PhD, SAN, Chair of the NBA Remuneration Committee, and Rachael Princewill, the Committee’s Secretary, the NBA commended the Assembly for its efforts to strengthen tenancy documentation laws. However, the Committee stressed the need for the new legislation to reflect the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order 2023, which came into effect on May 16, 2023, and was signed by the Attorney General of the Federation.
The Remuneration Order provides a structured and standardized framework for the remuneration of legal practitioners, ensuring fairness, transparency, and consistency in legal service fees. The Committee highlighted three key elements of the Order that should be integrated into the proposed bill:
– Standardization of legal fees by establishing clear benchmarks to prevent arbitrary charges and ensure uniformity.
– Professional integrity by upholding ethical and professional standards in legal transactions.
– Economic sustainability by protecting the financial viability of legal practitioners while maintaining quality legal services.
The NBA Remuneration Committee emphasized that incorporating these provisions would align Enugu State’s legal framework with national standards and promote confidence in legal transactions. They expressed their willingness to collaborate with the House of Assembly to provide any necessary clarification or support in the drafting process.
