NBA President Urges Reflection On Rule Of Law And Human Rights In Independence Day Message
As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Anniversary, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has issued a message emphasising the need for national reflection on justice, human rights, and governance. In his address, Osigwe called on citizens to not only celebrate the day but to also engage in sober reflection on the nation’s progress and the ongoing challenges to democracy and the rule of law.
In his statement, Osigwe highlighted the NBA’s commitment to promoting justice and human rights, noting that Independence Day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility of all Nigerians to build a nation rooted in fairness, equity, and accountability. He emphasized that the NBA remains at the forefront of these efforts, committed to upholding the principles of democracy and justice.
“Over the past six decades, we have faced numerous challenges, yet we continue to stand united in our quest for justice, democracy, and progress. Independence Day is not just a day of celebration but also a day for sober reflection,” Osigwe said. He underscored the importance of fostering a nation where the rule of law prevails and human rights are respected, and where governance is conducted in the best interests of the people.
The NBA President acknowledged the increasing demands from Nigerians for better governance, transparency, and respect for fundamental rights. He made specific reference to the ongoing protest movement, “Fearless in October,” organized by citizens calling for accountability in governance. Osigwe reaffirmed the NBA’s support for peaceful protests, stating that every Nigerian has the right to peacefully express their views without fear of harassment or intimidation.
In response to the growing activism, the NBA pledged to provide pro bono legal services to any peaceful protesters who may face unlawful treatment, including intimidation, harassment, or arbitrary detention during the protests. Osigwe announced that the NBA’s Citizens’ Liberties Committee and its Human Rights Committees would be on standby nationwide to address any incidents of human rights abuse during the protests.
“The NBA will not hesitate to take legal action against any violations of these rights,” he said, urging law enforcement agencies to respect the Constitution by allowing citizens to exercise their right to free speech and peaceful assembly without interference.
As the nation celebrates its 64th year of independence, Osigwe emphasized that the strength of Nigeria lies in its respect for the rights of its citizens, the accountability of its leaders, and the integrity of its institutions. He reiterated the NBA’s commitment to advocating for these principles and called on all Nigerians to work towards a future of greater justice and equity.
“May Nigeria continue to grow in peace, unity, and justice. Happy Independence Day!” Osigwe concluded.
