NBA President Reaffirms Commitment To Judicial Reforms, Lawyers’ Welfare
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe (SAN), has restated the association’s dedication to judicial reforms, the rule of law, and the welfare of its members, emphasizing that 2025 will be a pivotal year for the legal profession in Nigeria.
In his New Year message delivered on Wednesday in Abuja, Osigwe reflected on the achievements and challenges of the past year, expressing optimism about the opportunities ahead.
“As we step into 2025, I am honoured to welcome you to a new era of limitless possibilities, reflection, and renewed determination. The year 2024 was marked by unique challenges and triumphs that have strengthened the NBA into a more proactive and resilient Bar,” Osigwe said.
He praised the collective efforts of the association in championing justice, upholding the rule of law, and advocating for the welfare of its members across the country.
Outlining the NBA’s priorities for the new year, Osigwe highlighted key initiatives:
Judicial Reforms: The NBA will intensify efforts to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and address systemic bottlenecks hindering the swift and fair dispensation of justice.
Lawyers’ Welfare: Osigwe reaffirmed the association’s unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of lawyers, particularly young practitioners, ensuring they receive the dignity and opportunities they deserve in their careers.
Rule of Law and Human Rights: The NBA will continue to lead advocacy efforts to hold authorities accountable, combat police brutality, and address human rights abuses such as unlawful detentions.
“The year 2025 promises to be defining for the NBA and the legal profession. We will remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing judicial reforms and ensuring that the rights of citizens are upheld,” he added.
Osigwe emphasized the importance of unity within the Bar, urging members to foster dialogue, collaboration, and mutual respect to overcome the challenges facing the legal profession and the nation.
He encouraged lawyers to continue serving as beacons of hope and integrity for Nigeria, reiterating that the NBA’s strength lies in the collective efforts of its members.
The NBA President also acknowledged the contributions of members who had played a pivotal role in the association’s progress. He credited their dedication and innovative ideas as instrumental in driving the NBA’s successes.
