NBA President Osigwe Urges Supreme Court Reform And Tech Upgrade In Judiciary

NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN) has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s judiciary, especially the Supreme Court’s structure and workload.

Legal Experts Gather in Jos for 2025 NBA-SLP Conference

Osigwe delivered his keynote address during the 2025 NBA Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP) Annual Conference in Jos, Plateau State.
The event, themed “Uncommon Challenges in a Rapidly Changing Legal Environment,” attracted legal experts, judges, and thought leaders from across Nigeria.

Osigwe Demands Restructuring of Nigeria’s Appellate System

In his address, Osigwe stressed the need to improve legal service delivery and expand access to justice.
He described the Supreme Court’s current workload as unsustainable.
“The apex court hears too many appeals that should be resolved at lower levels,” Osigwe stated.
He called for reforms limiting appeals to constitutional and precedent-setting matters.

NBA President Criticizes Delays in Judicial Tech Adoption

Osigwe also addressed the judiciary’s slow technological progress.
He criticised the delay in making court judgments publicly accessible.
“In this digital era, judgments must be promptly available to lawyers and litigants,” he said.
He urged the implementation of e-filing systems and real-time publication of rulings.

Commends Industrial Court for Digital Progress

Osigwe praised the National Industrial Court for embracing digital reforms.
He encouraged other courts to follow its example and expand remote hearings.
“Virtual proceedings should be the norm for non-essential physical appearances,” he said.

Legal Profession Must Embrace Innovation

He emphasized the legal profession’s need to align with global best practices.
“To remain relevant, we must integrate technology and adopt smarter processes,” he noted.

A Renewed Call for Justice and Integrity

Closing his remarks, Osigwe reminded legal practitioners of their duty to uphold justice.
“As guardians of justice, we must recommit to fairness, integrity, and the rule of law,” he concluded.

Call to Action
Legal stakeholders must support reform and innovation to strengthen Nigeria’s justice system and restore public confidence in the courts.
