NBA President, Osigwe Constitutes Appeal Committees For Branch Elections

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced the constitution of Branch Elections Appeal Committees to oversee disputes arising from branch elections. This follows the provisions of Section 14(3)(i) of the NBA Constitution, 2015, as amended in 2021.

NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, made the announcement in a notice released to members. He stated that the National Executive Council (NEC) would ratify the Appeal Committees, which the NBA set up under Section 14(1) of the Constitution.

The NBA mandates the Committees under Section 14(2)(m) to hear and resolve complaints and petitions related to branch elections. They will also provide guidance and interpretations relating to election conduct and candidate qualifications.

The President thanked all Committee members for agreeing to serve. He described their acceptance as a sign of selfless dedication to the Bar’s integrity and the democratic process within its branches.

Osigwe called on all NBA members, especially aspirants seeking elective positions, to fully cooperate with the Appeal Committees. He emphasized that the Committees’ success depends on the goodwill and compliance of all stakeholders.

“The NBA values transparency and fairness,” Osigwe said. “These Appeal Committees will ensure a credible and peaceful transition process across branches.”

He assured that the NBA remains committed to supporting all branches through lawful and structured processes. He noted that appeals would be treated with fairness and urgency.

This development comes at a crucial time as various NBA branches across the country prepare for elections into executive positions. The constitution of the Appeal Committees demonstrates the NBA’s readiness to maintain order and discipline throughout the process.

The NBA has urged members to submit all appeals through the appropriate channels and await Committee decisions before taking further steps.

The Appeal Committees reaffirm the NBA’s commitment to justice, accountability, and internal democracy in its electoral processes.
