U.S. Commitment to Transparency and Sanctions Enforcement


NBA’s Focus on Key Legal and Security Challenges
In response, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, outlined critical areas where collaboration is needed to strengthen Nigeria’s legal system and security landscape:
- Weak Enforcement of Terrorism Laws: Osigwe stressed the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms to effectively combat terrorism and enhance national security.
- Restrictions on Online Freedom of Speech: He expressed concerns over increasing limitations on digital expression, advocating for a balanced approach that protects fundamental rights while addressing security concerns.
- Creation of State Police: The NBA President emphasized the urgent need for state policing, arguing that decentralised law enforcement would enhance security and improve efficiency.
- Advocacy with the Military: He cited the NBA’s recent intervention that led to the release of lawyer Kelvin Okoye, who was unlawfully detained by the Nigerian Navy, reinforcing the association’s commitment to due process and legal practitioners’ rights.


Commitment to Ongoing Collaboration
The meeting reaffirmed the NBA’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and strengthening Nigeria’s legal and security systems through strategic partnerships.
