The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, joined the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on a working visit to the Kuje Correctional Facility. The visit focused on evaluating rehabilitation initiatives and exploring ways to make correctional centres more reformative and less punitive.

During the visit, Osigwe commended the facility’s ongoing vocational, creative, and academic programs, noting that more than 150 inmates are currently enrolled in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), including several pursuing postgraduate degrees. He praised the skill acquisition efforts that help inmates develop employable skills for life after incarceration.

The NBA President reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to justice and reformation through its Pro Bono Centre, pledging continued collaboration with correctional institutions to identify inmates lacking legal representation. He also called for societal forgiveness and reintegration, urging communities to accept rehabilitated individuals as productive citizens.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized his ministry’s determination to improve correctional facilities through regular inspection and collaboration with the NBA. He noted that such partnerships will enhance efforts to build a correctional system anchored on dignity, justice, and transformation.

The visit highlighted the shared resolve of both the NBA and the Ministry of Interior to rebuild lives behind bars and promote a humane, reform-driven justice system in Nigeria.
