NBA President Advocates For Stronger Legal Frameworks And Accountability In Road Safety

At the Federal Road Safety Corps 8th Annual Lecture, held today at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, joined other distinguished panelists to discuss the role of institutions in advancing public accountability for road safety.
Responding to the question on what role the NBA can play in advocating for public accountability in road safety, the President emphasised that the Bar must ensure its active contribution to the drafting of laws that are clear, unambiguous, and free of jurisdictional conflicts. He further stressed that effective enforcement is key to preventing arbitrariness by both officers and road users.
He affirmed that the NBA will continue to create awareness on the rights and obligations of road users, ensuring that citizens know not only their responsibilities but also the protections available to them under the law.
Beyond legislation and awareness, the NBA President underscored the need for advocacy on road infrastructure, highlighting that both those who use the roads and those who administer the laws carry a shared responsibility for safety.
He concluded with a firm commitment that under his leadership, the NBA will strengthen its advocacy for compliance with road safety regulations while also pushing for continuous improvements in Nigeria’s road infrastructure, to safeguard lives and foster accountability.
