NBA NEC: Vote Of Confidence Passed On Maikyau-Led Administration, Other Highlights Of Meeting

The National Executive Council meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association has ended on a great note and here we bring you some of the highlights of the meeting.
-The Chairman of the Ughelli branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Matthew Osume moved a motion passing a Vote of Confidence on the YC Maikyau-led administration of the NBA. In moving the motion which was seconded by Nuhu Edya John, Chairman NBA Keffi, Mr Osume stated that within 6 months the NBA President has done marvellously well for the association and that he is assured that he will do more.
– The NBA President called for the live telecast of the proceedings of the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. This he maintained is in line with Section 36 (1) and (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which provides that judicial proceedings should be conducted in public; in the interest of openness, justice, transparency and trust in the judiciary.
– Several committees were constituted at the meeting; with Jonathan Gunu Taidi appointed Chairman of the NBA Stabilization Fund Committee while Emeka Ozoani, SAN was appointed Chairman, NBA Welfare Committee which was chaired by Maikyau in the last NBA administration.
– There were several deliberations on whether the NBA branch Vice Presidents can travel for familiarization tours at will without recourse to section 9 (5) of the NBA Constitution which requires such travels to be done where necessary. In response, the President stated that he won’t approve such travels if they are not within the ambit of the Constitution and that NBA funds should not be spent indiscriminately.
– Since the tenure of the current chairman of Body of Benchers (BOB) expires on the 30th March, 2023 and the current Vice Chairman, BOB automatically succeeds him, there were deliberations relating to the appointment of the new Vice Chairman of the Body of Benchers. Suggested names for the position were Funke Adekoya, SAN as preferred nominee and Olisa Agbakoba SAN as alternative nominee.
