NBA Kano Law Week 2024: 400 Detainees Held In Kano Custodial Centre- Kano CP
During the Law Week organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Kano State, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Usaini Gumel, disclosed that approximately 400 detainees are currently held in the Central Custodial Centre, Kurmawa, Kano.
Speaking at the event held on Monday in Kano under the theme “Turning Point,” Gumel highlighted various challenges facing the custodial system. These challenges include the absence of case files for many detainees, lack of court case records, delayed issuance of legal advice, and prolonged criminal trials without bail.
One of the key concerns raised by Gumel was the insufficient legal representation for detainees. He expressed worry over the potential implications for their rights within the criminal justice framework due to the lack of legal support.
Gumel also pointed out deficiencies in essential facilities at the Remand Home in Goron Dutse, Kano, such as healthcare, hygiene, staff offices, and educational amenities.
To address these challenges, the State Command has established a Steering Committee composed of criminal justice professionals. This committee is tasked with implementing innovative provisions outlined in the Police Duty Solicitors Scheme Document. They have engaged in constructive dialogues with stakeholders and visited correctional facilities to gather insights.
Gumel reiterated the police command’s commitment to promoting and safeguarding human rights through initiatives like the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme (PDSS). The PDSS aims to provide detainees with free legal aid and protect their rights throughout criminal justice proceedings.
