NBA Investigates Lawyers’ Altercation Over Clients
The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has launched an investigation into a reported clash between lawyers at the Samuel Ilori Courthouse in Ogba, Lagos, allegedly over clients.
In a statement signed by the NBA Ikeja Branch Secretary, Ayodeji Olabiwonnu, the association condemned the incident, describing it as an embarrassment to the legal profession.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, wishes to express its deep concern over the recent arrest and arraignment of some individuals, including persons alleged to be lawyers, for breach of public peace following a brawl,” the statement read.
The altercation, reportedly triggered by a dispute during open client solicitation, has drawn criticism for its potential to tarnish the reputation of the legal profession.
“This incident has caused significant embarrassment to the Branch and the legal profession as a whole, with the potential to negatively impact the public perception of the noble practice of law,” the statement added.
While the identities of the implicated lawyers were not disclosed, the NBA assured the public that due process would be followed.
“Justice and the rule of law require that all individuals involved be given the opportunity to defend themselves against the allegations. Should the ongoing independent investigations confirm the claims, the Branch will file appropriate petitions against those verified to be lawyers with the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC),” the NBA said.
The association also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the dignity and integrity of the legal profession, emphasizing that appropriate actions will be taken to address the matter and safeguard the profession’s reputation.
