NBA Condoles With Families Of Stampede Victims, Calls For Improved Safety Measures
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed its profound condolences to the families and loved ones of victims who lost their lives in recent stampedes in Anambra, Abuja, and Oyo States during the distribution of relief materials and monetary gifts. The tragic events, which claimed over 67 lives, included 37 fatalities in Oyo State, 10 at a Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and 20 in Okija, Anambra State.
Describing the incidents as deeply painful and preventable, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, emphasied the need for collective reflection and a commitment to implementing adequate safety measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.
“These heartbreaking incidents highlight the critical importance of crowd control and safety precautions during public events, especially those aimed at charitable distributions,” he stated.
While commending the generosity of individuals and organisations who extend help to the less privileged during the festive season, the NBA stressed the importance of prioritising safety through the following recommendations:
1. Effective Crowd Management: Organisers should establish orderly distribution points and systematic arrangements to prevent chaos.
2. Involvement of Law Enforcement: Safety personnel should be present to maintain order and prevent overcrowding.
3. Public Sensitisation: Messages encouraging calmness and patience during relief activities can help reduce risks.
4. Safer Distribution Methods: Utilising digital transfers or staggered schedules can minimise crowd-related hazards while ensuring equitable access to aid.
The association urged government agencies, private organisations, and individuals to adopt these measures to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.
“As we celebrate this festive season, let us collectively ensure that every Nigerian life is safeguarded. Preventing such avoidable losses must remain a shared responsibility,” Osigwe added.
The NBA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the dignity and safety of all Nigerians and called on stakeholders to prioritise safety in their acts of goodwill.
“Our prayers are with the bereaved families, and we ask that God grants eternal rest to the departed souls,” the statement concluded.
