NBA Condemns Mob Action, Calls For Justice In Uromi Killings

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the gruesome killing of traveling hunters in Uromi, Edo State. The association describes it as a disturbing act of mob action. NBA President, Afam Osigwe, SAN, decried the growing trend of vigilante justice in Nigeria. He therefore called for immediate government intervention.

Osigwe stated that no individual deserves to be subjected to mob violence, regardless of the crime they are accused of committing.

He emphasized that every accused person has the right to due process, including investigation and prosecution in a court of law.

“This tragic incident highlights the rising menace of mob action across the country. It is unacceptable for citizens to take the law into their own hands,” Osigwe said. He warned that such acts weaken the criminal justice system and promote lawlessness in Nigeria.

The NBA urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that all perpetrators of mob violence are swiftly brought to justice. “Allowing these crimes to go unpunished will embolden others and further erode public confidence in the rule of law,” he added.

The association also called on the Edo State Government and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the killings. Osigwe insisted that vigilante justice must not replace legal procedures in an enlightened society.

The NBA extended condolences to the families of the deceased, urging authorities to take decisive action to prevent future occurrences. “Justice must be served to restore faith in our legal system,” Osigwe concluded.
