Tinubu Hails Ayo Obe At 70, Celebrates Her Role In Democracy And Human Rights

 

President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to prominent human rights lawyer and pro-democracy advocate, Ayo Obe, on her 70th birthday.

In a statement issued by the Presidency, Tinubu praised Obe’s decades-long dedication to justice, democracy, and national development.

He described Ayo Obe as a patriot whose courage and convictions helped shape Nigeria’s democratic journey, especially during military rule.

“Your struggle against injustice and human rights abuse remains a defining feature of your public service,” Tinubu said in the message.

He noted Obe’s sacrifices during Nigeria’s years under military dictatorship, highlighting her fearless commitment to democratic values despite personal risks.

President Tinubu acknowledged Ayo Obe’s impact in promoting civil liberties, social accountability, and the rule of law across decades.

“You stood with like-minded Nigerians to challenge oppression and restore democracy, and your legacy lives on,” he added.

Tinubu also remembered her leadership roles at key institutions, including the Civil Liberties Organisation and the Nigeria Transition Monitoring Group.

Obe also served on the Police Service Commission and led the Democratic Institute’s Abuja Elections Programme from 2006 to 2009.

Tinubu said her work has left a lasting impression on Nigeria’s democratic institutions and civic space.

He prayed for continued strength, health, and wisdom for Ayo Obe as she enters another decade of service to the nation.

“Ayo Obe has set a standard for legal activism and national service worthy of recognition and celebration,” Tinubu said.
