Nancy Pelosi Responds To Judge’s Block On Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Order: “If You’re Born In America, You’re An American”
Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has weighed in on a federal judge’s decision to temporarily block former President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for children born to non-citizen migrants in the United States.
On Monday, January 20, President Trump, shortly after his swearing-in, signed an executive order aiming to end the automatic granting of citizenship to babies born on U.S. soil to parents who are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
However, on Thursday, U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour issued a temporary restraining order, halting the implementation of Trump’s order. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by several states, including Oregon, Arizona, Illinois, and Washington, opposing the executive order.
During a court hearing in Seattle, Judge Coughenour criticized the constitutionality of the executive order. “I’ve been on the bench for four decades, and I can’t remember another case where the question presented is as clear as this one is,” Coughenour stated, calling the order “blatantly unconstitutional.”
He further added, “There are other times in world history where we look back and people of goodwill can say, ‘Where were the judges? Where were the lawyers?’”
The judge’s ruling prevents federal agencies from enforcing the executive order while the legal challenge proceeds.
Reacting to the court’s decision, Nancy Pelosi expressed her support for birthright citizenship on Twitter, writing: “If you’re born in America, you’re an American. Period.”
The temporary block represents a significant legal hurdle for the Trump administration’s immigration policies, as challenges to the order continue to unfold in the courts.
