MULAN Conference: CJN Urges Lawyers To Apply Caution In Use Of Artificial Intelligence

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has advised lawyers to approach the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with caution. She warned that while AI can enhance efficiency, it must not disrupt Nigeria’s legal values or cultural norms.
The CJN delivered this advice during the 16th Annual General Conference of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN) in Ilorin, Kwara State. The conference focused on the theme “Artificial Intelligence, Law and Religion in Nigeria.”
Justice Kekere-Ekun, represented by Justice Ridwan Abdullahi of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division, said AI mimics human intelligence to solve problems through technology. She added that lawyers must critically examine how AI fits into the existing legal system.
“The Nigerian legal system must align with AI development without compromising our values,” she said. She emphasized the importance of using AI as a tool, not a replacement for ethical reasoning.
The CJN also stated that while technology can improve legal processes, it must not override human judgment or constitutional safeguards.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by Attorney General Senior Ibrahim, encouraged lawyers to use AI in legal research and practice improvement.
Also speaking, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali-Pantami, called for a National Artificial Intelligence Act. He urged the federal government and National Assembly to create legislation that addresses AI’s risks and benefits.
Ali-Pantami reminded lawyers to respect Islamic ethics while applying AI in their legal work.
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, represented by Professor Yusuf Ali, SAN, urged lawyers to use AI to promote humanity and religion.
MULAN President Saidu Muhammed Tundun-Wada noted that AI offers vast opportunities for justice delivery and legal service enhancement.
Lawyers at the event agreed that AI is promising but must be handled with responsibility and cultural sensitivity.
