Mozambique To Swear In New Parliament Amid Election Controversy And Protests

Mozambique is set to swear in its new parliament on Monday after October’s contested elections sparked violent protests. Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, claiming he won the presidential vote, has called for peaceful protests against the inauguration of Daniel Chapo as president.
Opposition parties Renamo and MDM, alleging election rigging, will boycott the ceremony. Post-election unrest has left about 300 dead and caused significant economic disruptions. Mondlane, who returned from exile last week, urged supporters to “demonstrate refusal” of the official election results.
