Minister Urges Lawyers To Lead Fight Against Corruption

The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, has called on legal professionals to take a leading role in combating corruption and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.

Speaking at the Young Lawyers Forum Summit organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Sokoto branch, on Saturday, Goronyo emphasised the pivotal role lawyers play in shaping a fair and just society. He highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s eight priority areas and encouraged young lawyers to contribute meaningfully to their realisation.

“Nigeria’s legal system faces challenges such as inefficient justice delivery, judicial corruption, and outdated laws,” Goronyo said. “As young lawyers, strive to build character and establish your names. Equip yourselves with knowledge of the Legal Practitioners Act and Rules of Professional Conduct to avoid unethical practices.”

The minister cautioned against the “get-rich-quick syndrome,” urging lawyers to leverage legal opportunities and technology responsibly. “With technology, you can streamline case management, enhance research, and reach potential clients effectively,” he said.

Justice Saidu Sifawa, Chief Judge of Sokoto and Chairman of the summit, also addressed the gathering, urging young lawyers to uphold professionalism and seize opportunities to expand their knowledge. “The challenges faced by young lawyers today require urgent attention to unlock their potential,” he noted.

Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding the 8th Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto, encouraged lawyers to use their expertise to assist the less privileged, uphold justice, and contribute to societal betterment.

Rasheedat Abubakar, Chairman of the NBA Sokoto branch, reiterated the branch’s commitment to supporting young lawyers in achieving professional excellence through discipline and continuous learning.

The summit served as a platform to inspire young legal minds and address pressing challenges in the profession, emphasising the importance of integrity, knowledge, and purposeful action in advancing the nation’s legal and judicial systems.
