In a significant development, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has been appointed as the Chairman of the newly formed NBA National Remuneration Committee. This decision was made during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held on December 7, 2023.

Key Appointments:

1. Chairman: Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN
2. Alternate Chairman: Aminu Sani Gadanya, mni
3. Secretary: Foluke Akinmoladun
4. Assistant Secretary: Florence Marcus

Committee’s Mandate:

The NBA National Remuneration Committee is tasked with implementing recommendations from the NBA Remuneration Implementation Committee. In addition to duties assigned by the President or NEC, the committee is responsible for executing the outlined responsibilities in the Legal Practitioners Remuneration (for Business, Legal Service, and Representation) Order, 2023.

Immediate Tasks:

Within 30 days from its inauguration, the Committee, under the leadership of Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, will formulate guidelines regulating the activities of both the National and Branch Remuneration Committees, aligning with the Remuneration Order.

Delegated Investigative Power:

To enhance effectiveness, the Committee has been granted the authority to delegate the investigation of any complaint to the Remuneration Committees of the Branches. This strategic approach is by Paragraph 11(3)(b) of the Remuneration Order.

The President of the NBA, Y. C. Maikyau, SAN, expressed gratitude to all members of the Committee for accepting the call to serve the association. The President also urged all members to extend their cooperation to ensure the successful execution of the Committee’s mandate.
