Maritime Seminar For Judges Aims To Promote Alternative Dispute Resolution In The Sector – NSC Boss
The 17th International Maritime Seminar for Judges, organized by the Nigeria Shippers Council in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI), is focused on promoting alternative dispute resolution (ADR) within the maritime sector, according to the council’s Executive Secretary/CEO, Barrister Akutah Pius.
During an appearance on the TVC programme “Business Nigeria,” Akutah emphasized the importance of ADR in ensuring the swift resolution of disputes, particularly in commercial cases within the maritime industry. He pointed out that prolonged commercial disputes negatively impact the economy, making the promotion of ADR essential for economic stability.
“The Nigerian justice system strongly advocates for alternative dispute resolution to reduce the pressure on the courts and ensure that disputes are quickly resolved, especially in commercial cases like those in the maritime sector,” Akutah stated. “The longer commercial disputes linger in court, the more detrimental it is to the economy. By promoting ADR, we aim to resolve issues swiftly, fostering teamwork among stakeholders without the acrimony that often accompanies court resolutions.”
He also highlighted the council’s efforts to encourage ADR to maintain harmonious relationships among maritime sector stakeholders. “We have partnered with the NJI under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, which oversees the activities of the Nigeria Shippers Council, to ensure this programme, which has been ongoing for over 30 years, positively impacts how maritime disputes are resolved,” Akutah said. “Our goal is to avoid delays in resolving disputes, creating a safer and more cooperative business environment.”
The 17th edition of the International Maritime Seminar for Judges is being held in Abuja from Tuesday, July 9th to Thursday, July 11th, 2024.
