Maikyau, Idornigie, And Others Appointed To Permanent Court Of Arbitration

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Yakubu Maikyau SAN, is among four prominent Nigerian arbitrators appointed to the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) at The Hague, Netherlands. The other distinguished arbitrators include Prof. Paul Idornigie SAN, former Acting Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS); Prof. Emilia Onyema, FCIArb; and Mrs. Funmi Roberts, FCIArb. All four appointees are also members of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK).

These appointments, confirmed by the PCA, were made following nominations by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The appointees will serve an initial six-year term.

Each Contracting State is entitled to four members at the PCA, an intergovernmental organization with 122 contracting parties. The PCA facilitates arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution between states and has evolved into a modern, multi-faceted arbitral institution.

During a recent visit to the PCA, Maikyau met with the PCA’s Secretary-General, Hugo Hans Siblesz, and presented gifts as a token of appreciation for the PCA’s work in international dispute resolution. This gesture highlights the NBA’s intent to strengthen its relationship with the PCA and explore collaborative arbitration and dispute resolution opportunities.

The PCA is dedicated to serving the international community in the field of dispute resolution. Established in 1899, it has developed specialized panels of arbitrators and experts for various types of disputes, including environmental and outer space issues. To enhance accessibility, the PCA has also opened offices in various cities worldwide.
