Lawyers Urged To Heed EFCC Chair Olukoyede’s Call For Professionalism
In a recent charge to lawyers, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has once again called on defence counsels involved in EFCC cases to uphold the ethics of their profession. Speaking through the Ibadan Zonal Director, ACE1 Hauwa Garba Ringim, during a visit by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ibadan Branch, Olukoyede criticized the unprofessional conduct of some lawyers who interfere with investigations and push for outcomes outside the commission’s standard procedures.
Olukoyede expressed frustration over lawyers attempting to influence the EFCC’s investigative process, citing instances where counsel have pressured officers to expedite investigations on their clients. He also condemned the practice of lawyers soliciting clients within EFCC premises, stressing that such actions undermine the integrity of the legal profession. While acknowledging the need for collaboration between the EFCC and the Bar for effective service delivery, Olukoyede assured the legal community that the commission is committed to working with lawyers but emphasized the importance of mutual respect and adherence to professional standards. NBA Ibadan Branch Chairman, Ibrahim Lawal, echoed this sentiment, noting that effective cooperation between the EFCC and the legal profession is essential in combating corruption.
Lawal revealed that his branch has established an Anti-touting Committee to address unethical behavior among lawyers and reaffirmed the NBA’s position against lawyers serving as sureties in EFCC cases. Olukoyede’s appeal for professionalism is part of his broader effort to re-position the EFCC for greater efficiency since assuming office in 2023. He has been vocal about the need for lawyers to assist, rather than obstruct, the commission’s mandate to bring financial crime suspects to justice.
The EFCC chairman also urged the National Assembly to strengthen the federal whistle-blower policy, which he believes will enhance law enforcement efforts. As Olukoyede continues to push for reforms within the EFCC, he remains focused on ridding Nigeria of economic and financial crimes, a mission lawyers are called upon to support by adhering to ethical practices.
