Lawyer Allegedly Kills Orphan During Village Election Celebration In Ebonyi

In a tragic incident in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, a legal practitioner named Sunday Ununu has reportedly killed an orphan, Nnamdi Nwite Ugo, during a village election celebration. The incident occurred during the Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney community election in Abakaliki Local Government Area, where Ununu, a counsel for the group, was celebrating by firing a gun into the air.

The Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney is responsible for managing lands in the area and had recently conducted an election to select its leaders. Following the election, Ununu’s loyalist won a key position, prompting Ununu to jubilantly fire shots into the air during the celebration. Tragically, a stray bullet struck Ugo, piercing his nose and exiting through his mouth, resulting in his death.

Ugo, who had lost both parents and had no close relatives, was a vulnerable member of the community. Local sources allege that efforts are being made to cover up the incident, with reports suggesting that the lawyer’s family and distant relatives of the deceased are negotiating a settlement to bury the matter quietly.

A video of the celebration, showing Ununu wearing a yellow T-shirt and firing the gun, has been circulating on social media. Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed Ununu’s arrest in connection with the incident. The police spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrest but stated that the details of the case are still under investigation.
