Lagos State Enacts Law To Combat Illegal Organ Harvesting

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has signed the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Bill into law, marking a significant step in the fight against illegal organ harvesting. The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, made this announcement on Thursday during a press briefing at the Ministry of Justice in Alausa, Ikeja.

The new law prohibits unauthorised organ harvesting and unregulated medical practices, establishing a robust framework for ethical and legal transplantation procedures. Pedro highlighted that violators face severe penalties, including up to 10 years imprisonment or fines of up to N10 million. Additionally, the law bans advertisements for the sale of human organs to prevent exploitation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also signed four other bills into law, addressing key areas such as consumer protection, public safety, and victim support:

• Consumer Protection Law – Strengthens consumer rights by empowering residents to hold businesses accountable, enforcing safety standards, and imposing strict penalties on violations, including fines up to N5 million and potential imprisonment.
• Lagos Enforcement Training Institute Law – Aims to enhance the professionalism of law enforcement in the state.
• Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law – Ensures support and protection for crime victims and witnesses.
• Fire and Rescue Service Law – Updates regulations to improve emergency response and public safety.

“These laws are not just milestones in Lagos’ legislative journey; they are a testament to the government’s dedication to justice, security, and the welfare of its citizens,” Pedro stated.

He further emphasized the importance of these laws in safeguarding public health, protecting human rights, and ensuring Lagos remains a hub of progress and opportunity. Residents were urged to familiarize themselves with the new legislation and actively participate in its enforcement.

With these developments, Lagos continues to strengthen its commitment to fostering a safer and more equitable environment for all its inhabitants.
