Lagos State DSVA Trains Court Registrars To Strengthen Response To Gender-Based Violence
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) recently conducted a focused training session for Court Registrars from the Lagos State Judiciary, designed to enhance their understanding and response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) cases. Held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Friday, the one-day workshop saw the participation of around 90 legal registrars, aiming to improve judicial sensitivity and strengthen the legal framework surrounding SGBV.
Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, DSVA Executive Secretary, was represented by Program Officer Ms. Zainab Alaka in delivering the opening remarks. Vivour-Adeniyi highlighted the crucial influence registrars wield in judicial proceedings, stating, “As court registrars, you play a pivotal role in the administration of justice. Your decisions and actions profoundly impact the lives of those who come before the court.”
The training provided registrars with a deeper understanding of SGBV, addressing various forms of abuse and the legal resources available to protect survivors. Chief Registrar Tajudeen A. Elias, in his goodwill message, condemned SGBV as a “heinous crime” and expressed confidence that Lagos could eradicate such violence with sustained collaborative efforts.
Sessions were led by legal and social experts, including Dr. Babajide Martins, Director of Public Prosecutions, who focused on the relevant laws around SGBV and stressed the need for empathy toward survivors. “Court registrars must listen attentively and show empathy toward survivors,” he said, adding that all public servants are obligated to report observed cases of abuse to uphold the state’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
Mrs. Juliet Olumuyiwa-Rufai led a subsequent session on “Understanding Gender Roles,” where she emphasized that gender-based violence is not only a criminal issue but also a public health concern, often perpetuated by societal norms and a pervasive “culture of silence.”
The DSVA’s initiative underscores Lagos State’s commitment to addressing SGBV through judicial education and empowering registrars with the skills needed to support survivors effectively.
