LASIEC announces local council elections in Lagos on July 12, 2025. The election will fill 57 council chairmanship and 376 councillorship positions. LASIEC Head of Public Affairs Tope Ojo confirmed the date on Friday in Abuja. He said the elections will cover 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs across Lagos.

Ojo noted that a supplementary election will occur on July 19 if needed. He urged political parties to collect nomination forms from the LASIEC headquarters immediately. “We must ensure a transparent process,” Ojo said during his briefing.

The current local council officials near their constitutional end. LASIEC now prepares to prevent a governance vacuum. The commission released the official Notice of Election and plans a stakeholder meeting with all registered parties on Tuesday. Ojo confirmed that detailed Election Guidelines will appear on April 17.

Political rallies and campaigns will start on April 18 and run until July 9. This schedule gives parties nearly three months to present their platforms to the electorate. The nomination process for substituted and only candidate entries will run from June 18 to June 25. LASIEC Chair Justice Ayotunde Phillips (rtd) vowed to ensure free, fair, and inclusive elections.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stresses that local governance drives public services and community development. He says Lagos benefits from effective elections that set the stage for urban progress. “Lagos elections must reflect the dynamic spirit of our communities,” he commented.

Analysts view the elections as a key test of political strength and grassroots engagement. They believe these local elections will influence broader political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. LASIEC urges all stakeholders, civil society groups, and security agencies to support a peaceful, orderly process. The commission plans to monitor the elections closely and resolve any disputes swiftly.

The scheduled elections are critical for the continued development of Lagos. The process promises to empower voters and strengthen democracy at the local level. Observers expect these elections to enhance accountability and improve service delivery across Lagos.
