Lagos Court Orders Arrest Of Former AMCON MD Over N76 Billion Fraud Case

Justice Mojisola Dada of the Lagos Special Offences Court in Ikeja issued a warrant for the arrest of Ahmed Lawal Kuru, former Managing Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), after he failed to appear in court on Tuesday for his arraignment in a fraud case involving N76 billion and million.

Kuru was scheduled to be arraigned alongside Captain Roy Ilegbodu, Managing Director of Arik Air; Kamilu Omokide, the airline’s receiver manager; Union Bank of Nigeria Plc; and Super Bravo Limited. The case lists Omokide, Kuru, Ilegbodu, Union Bank, and Super Bravo Limited as the first to fifth defendants, respectively.

During the hearing, Wahab Shittu (SAN), counsel for the prosecution, requested the arrest warrant due to Kuru’s repeated absence, noting that he had previously evaded administrative bail granted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Shittu argued, “The former MD of AMCON has consistently jumped bail and blocked contact with authorities. Someone of his stature should not behave in such a manner.” He emphasised that all other defendants had been served and were present.

Counsel for the other defendants included Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN) for the first and third defendants, Olalekan Ojo (SAN) for Union Bank, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) for Super Bravo Limited, and I.B. Amefula, who represented Kuru in the absence of Olasupo Sashore (SAN).

Justice Dada granted the prosecution’s request, issuing the warrant for Kuru’s arrest. She stated that the order would be revoked if Kuru presents himself at the next hearing. “This court will not condone such disregard for legal proceedings,” the judge said.

The case revolves around allegations of financial misconduct and fraud totalling N76 billion, with the arraignment delayed due to Kuru’s absence. His no-show has raised concerns about accountability among high-ranking officials, particularly given his past position as AMCON’s managing director.

The court adjourned the case, with further proceedings contingent on Kuru’s apprehension or voluntary appearance.
