Kano Lawyer, B.Y. Gambo, Esq. Denies Allegations Of Fraudulent Legal Practice
Barrister Bako Yunusa Gambo, a legal practitioner in Kano, has refuted allegations circulating on social media that he is a fake lawyer. The claims, first reported by anonymous blog TG News, accused Gambo of using fraudulent credentials to practice law for nearly two decades.
In response to the allegations, Gambo issued a statement categorically denying the accusations and providing clarity on his legal career. He explained that he sat for the National Examinations Council (NECO) exams in 2000 under the name Haruna Bako Gambo, which he used to secure admission to study law at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 2001. He graduated in 2006, completed law school, and was called to the bar in 2007.
Gambo also clarified that he later opted to formally change his name to Bako Yunusa Gambo, a family name, which he has been using in his legal practice ever since. He dismissed the blogger’s claims that he used his younger brother’s 2014 WAEC certificate to gain admission to ABU as “entirely false and illogical.” According to Gambo, his brother’s exams took place 14 years after he had already been called to the bar, making the allegations impossible.
“The idea that I used a 2014 certificate to secure admission in 2001 and be called to the bar in 2007 is both ridiculous and baseless,” Gambo said in his statement.
The blog had also alleged that Gambo paid his practicing fees and obtained an NBA seal under the name “Haruna Bako Gambo.” However, Gambo dismissed this claim, arguing that no fake lawyer would be able to pay the required NBA fees or possess an official seal. He further noted that no formal complaint had been filed against him with the NBA’s Kano branch.
Gambo described the allegations as a malicious attempt to tarnish his reputation, calling the claims by the faceless bloggers “a baseless attack on his integrity.”
“I remain a practicing lawyer of 18 years, committed to transparency, honesty, and upholding the highest standards of the legal profession,” Gambo concluded.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) regarding the allegations. However, Gambo’s rebuttal has sparked conversation within the legal community, with many calling for stricter measures against defamatory publications aimed at legal practitioners.
