Kano Emirate Dispute: Only One Emir Allowed By Law, Says Falana

Renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has declared that Kano State is legally bound to have only one Emir, aligning with the recent Court of Appeal ruling affirming the position of the 16th Emir of Kano.

Falana asserted while speaking at the 21st Memorial Lecture of Chief Gani Fawehinmi in Lagos, congratulating the Emir on the legal victory.

“Your Majesty, we congratulate you on your victory in the Court of Appeal,” Falana stated. “Your opponents may proceed to the Supreme Court, but as far as the law stands, the matter is settled. There can only be one Emir in Kano.”

He emphasised the need for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to address the situation, urging legal practitioners to avoid misleading their clients on settled legal matters.

“The court has made it clear that chieftaincy issues fall outside the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court. Unfortunately, some lawyers have been creating unnecessary confusion. The NBA must step in to ensure the profession is not dragged into turmoil,” Falana said.

He further criticized ongoing attempts to challenge the Emir’s position, stating, “Whether they go to the Supreme Court or any other court, you have come to stay. There cannot be two Emirs in Kano, just as we cannot have two speakers in Rivers State. This confusion must end.”

The lawyer’s remarks underscore the importance of respecting court decisions and maintaining stability in traditional institutions across Nigeria.
