Kaduna Court Sentences Trader To 10 Strokes Of Cane For Assaulting Friend Over N3,000 Debt

A Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna has sentenced a 34-year-old trader, Jibrin Yusuf, to 10 strokes of cane for assaulting his friend over an unpaid N3,000 debt.

Delivering the judgment on Wednesday, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel handed down the penalty after Yusuf pleaded guilty to conspiracy and assault charges.

The magistrate noted that the court showed leniency because the convict did not waste the court’s time by admitting guilt. However, he warned that a harsher punishment would be imposed if Yusuf committed a similar offense in the future.

Additionally, the court ordered Yusuf to pay N230,000 in restitution to the complainant, Abubakar Haruna.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, Haruna reported the incident at Gabasawa Police Station on February 16.

Leo explained that Haruna, who had borrowed the N3,000 from his neighbor in the past, was in his room when Yusuf demanded repayment. When Haruna could not produce the money, an altercation ensued.

The situation escalated when Yusuf mobilized four others—who are now at large—to trespass into Haruna’s room, where they assaulted him, destroyed property worth N50,000, and stole his brother’s phone valued at N180,000.

The prosecutor stated that the offenses contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
