Jonathan Criticises Politically Motivated Court Judgments; Olajengbesi Lauds Ozekhome’s Legal Contributions And Mentorship
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has voiced strong concerns over politically influenced court rulings, warning that such judgments threaten the stability of Nigeria’s democracy. Speaking at the 67th birthday celebration and book launch in honour of prominent lawyer Mike Ozekhome (SAN) in Abuja on Thursday, Jonathan stressed the negative impact of questionable legal decisions on the nation’s political system.
Jonathan cited a recent court ruling that allowed a ward chairman to expel a national officer of a political party, describing it as destabilising for major political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). He urged the Supreme Court to revisit the judgment, noting, “Democracy in Nigeria is becoming unstable, like an inverted cone, and even the smallest disturbance can cause it to fall.”
He further criticised the idea of a subordinate officer removing a national leader, drawing a comparison to a university department head expelling a vice-chancellor, and highlighted the crisis such rulings have created within political parties.
Jonathan’s concerns were echoed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who praised Ozekhome’s dedication to legal reform. Obasanjo commended Ozekhome for his courage and integrity in advocating for political and social justice. Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) also lauded Ozekhome’s intellectual contributions, particularly through the 50 books he launched, which address law, politics, and philosophy.
The event, attended by legal luminaries including Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), Peter Obi, and Prof. Jerry Gana, further highlighted Ozekhome’s contributions to Nigeria’s legal landscape.
In a separate statement, human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi praised Ozekhome’s mentorship of young lawyers, emphasising his dedication to nurturing the next generation of legal professionals. Olajengbesi remarked that Ozekhome’s courtroom successes and advocacy for justice have made him a legendary figure in the legal profession.
“Ozekhome is not just a lawyer, he is a force of nature,” Olajengbesi said, adding that his commitment to mentoring young lawyers and sharing his knowledge demonstrates his true leadership in the legal field.
The gathering underscored Ozekhome’s lasting impact on both the legal profession and Nigeria’s democratic development.
