John Fashanu Sues Nigerian Police For £100,000 Following Arrest

Former England striker John Fashanu has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian Police, alleging unlawful arrest and human rights violations.
Fashanu, 62, was arrested over allegations of criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, and trespassing, charges he strongly denies. The dispute reportedly involves a 22-acre land deal, where investors had agreed to pay over for the property.
According to reports by The Mirror, the ex-footballer was apprehended after questioning contractors who were erecting a fence on the disputed land.
Furthermore, Fashanu claims that he, his wife Vivian, and their lawyer were subjected to “arrest, detention, and inhuman treatment” for three hours on December 16, 2024. He further alleges that the police violated his rights by imposing intermittent restrictions on his personal liberty.
His lawyer, Mr. Chigbu, confirmed that all three individuals have met their bail conditions and were granted administrative bail.
Fashanu’s Football Legacy
Fashanu, played for Norwich City, Wimbledon, and Aston Villa. He was instrumental in Wimbledon’s 1988 FA Cup victory and earned two caps for England.
Consequently, the case is expected to proceed in court, as Fashanu seeks justice over what he describes as a “gross unconstitutional violation” of his rights.
