Insecurity: Peter Obi Urges Halt On Government Foreign Trips Until Crisis Is Addressed

*Calls for Urgent Action as Kidnappings Surge in Abuja

In response to the escalating security crisis in Nigeria, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has strongly advocated for a suspension of all foreign trips by government officials until the issue of insecurity is effectively tackled.

The call comes in the wake of a surge in kidnappings by gunmen in Abuja, causing heightened fear among residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). President Bola Tinubu convened an emergency meeting with security chiefs, during which Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, issued directives to police tactical commanders.

Expressing his concern over the worsening security situation, the former Anambra governor took to his social media platform to address the issue. In a post on Tuesday, Obi emphasized the urgent need for leaders to take decisive measures to address the rampant terror attacks, banditry, kidnappings, and violence across the nation.

“As terror attacks, banditry, kidnappings, and violence continue to rage through the country, it is more concerning now with the surge of violence spreading through the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja,” he stated.

Obi pointed out the disappointment in the lack of significant improvement in security, the economy, and corruption despite campaign promises made by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2015. He cited the commitments made at the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in August 2022, urging the current government to fulfill its pledges.

“At the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association held in Lagos in August 2022, the then Vice Presidential Candidate, Sen Kashim Shettima categorically stated that if APC is elected, he as Vice President would be in charge of security, while the President as an expert in the economy would handle the economy,” Obi highlighted.

He concluded by emphasizing the critical role security plays in attracting foreign investments, asserting that the current security situation in Nigeria poses a significant deterrent to potential investors and partners. Obi urged the government to prioritize the fulfillment of their campaign promises and demonstrate unwavering effort to address the security challenges, even if achieving 100% results may be challenging.
