Inibehe Effiong Takes Legal Action Against Erisco CEO For Defamation
In a bold move against alleged defamation, lawyer Inibehe Effiong has taken legal action against Eric Umeofia, the CEO of Erisco Foods Ltd. Effiong filed a lawsuit over comments made during an interview with Television Continental (TVC) on October 2, 2023, where he was referred to as a “fake lawyer.”
Effiong, who serves as legal counsel for Chioma Okoli, argued that the remarks made by Umeofia during the TVC interview have caused significant damage to his reputation and professional standing. The interview comments were subsequently circulated widely on social media platforms, including Facebook.
Effiong’s legal action seeks redress for the alleged defamation, demanding an apology from Erisco Ltd. and Umeofia to be published in at least two national newspapers. Additionally, he seeks a full retraction of the defamatory statement and financial compensation amounting to N100 million. The defendants are given a deadline of 14 days to comply with these demands.
The crux of the issue stems from Umeofia’s assertion during the interview that Effiong was a “fake lawyer” hired by Okoli, insinuating deceit on Effiong’s part. Effiong vehemently denies these allegations, emphasizing his legitimate qualifications and tenure as a legal practitioner for the past decade.
Effiong’s legal representative, renowned human rights lawyer Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, has been tasked with pursuing the case. In a demand letter served on Erisco Foods Limited, Falana outlined the actions required for resolution, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter and the impact it has had on Effiong’s personal and professional life.
The lawsuit is part of Effiong’s ongoing representation of Okoli, who is embroiled in a legal dispute with Erisco Foods over a tomato paste review. The legal action underscores Effiong’s commitment to defending his reputation and holding accountable those who allegedly engage in defamatory conduct.
