Imo Police Pledge To Enforce Law Against Gender-Based Violence
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Aboki Danjuma, has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to enforcing the Imo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2021, with a focus on protecting women, children, and individuals with disabilities.
Speaking at a recent advocacy event in Owerri, organized as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), CP Danjuma emphasized the importance of swift and decisive action against offenders. He urged the public to report incidents of violence, assuring that complaints would be handled professionally and confidentially.
The event, attended by key stakeholders, featured remarks from the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, former House member Uju Onwudiwe, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Stella Chinecherem. They called for enhanced collaboration between law enforcement agencies and civil society to ensure the effective enforcement of the VAPP law.
They underscored the importance of a unified approach to safeguarding vulnerable groups and commended the police for their role in combating violence against women and children.
Members of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) and various civil society organizations also attended the event. CP Danjuma praised POWA for its ongoing support of victims, highlighting the association’s critical role in advocacy, awareness, and empowerment.
He pledged continued collaboration with POWA and other stakeholders in the ongoing fight against gender-based violence, reiterating the police’s dedication to upholding the rights and safety of all citizens.
The event underscores Imo State’s commitment to eradicating violence against vulnerable groups and ensuring justice for survivors.
