IGP Sues Former Senator Andy Uba Over Alleged N400 Million Fraud
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated legal action against Andy Uba, a former senator representing Anambra South, over allegations of a fraudulent scheme involving N400 million.
Uba and two co-defendants, Crystal Uba and Benjamin Etu, face a two-count charge in a case filed before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/538/2024, was dated October 8.
Details of the Charges
The defendants, along with a fourth individual identified as Hajiya Fatima (currently at large), are accused of conspiring to commit fraud in 2022. They allegedly deceived George Uboh, claiming they could secure the appointment of a managing director for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in exchange for N400 million.
Uboh lodged a formal petition with the IGP on April 5, 2023, reportedly providing documentary and voice recording evidence to substantiate his claims.
Prosecution Updates
M.L. Anthony, counsel for the prosecution, informed the court on November 13 that the defendants had evaded service of court documents despite being granted administrative bail.
Anthony also revealed that the defendants initially secured a fundamental rights enforcement order preventing the police from prosecuting them. However, following the lifting of the order, they were formally charged.
The prosecution has named six witnesses to testify against Uba and his co-defendants.
Next Court Date
Justice Ekwo adjourned the matter to February 18, 2025, for the arraignment of the defendants.
This legal development marks a significant chapter in efforts to address allegations of corruption and fraud within the political landscape.
