House Of Representatives Orders NCC To Block Pornographic Websites In Nigeria

The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to mandate internet service providers to block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content in the country.
Furthermore, the resolution was passed on Tuesday following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State, who argued that unrestricted access to pornography negatively impacts societal values, particularly among young people.
Tafoki noted that several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have enacted laws prohibiting pornography, citing concerns raised by psychologists and sociologists about its potential to encourage adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists worldwide have issued strong warnings about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of consuming pornographic content,” he stated.

Also, the motion was adopted through a voice vote conducted by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, with lawmakers stressing the importance of protecting Nigerian cultural and moral standards.
The NCC has been urged to ensure immediate compliance, with penalties to be imposed on internet service providers that fail to enforce the directive.
