Ghana’s President Suspends Chief Justice Torkornoo Over Misconduct Probe

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo following misconduct allegations that prompted a formal inquiry.
Suspension Follows Constitutional Procedure
The President announced the decision on April 22, 2025, after consulting the Council of State, as required by Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. The move came in response to three petitions seeking the Chief Justice’s removal.
Prima Facie Case Established After Response
Chief Justice Torkornoo received 10 days to respond to the allegations and submitted her reply on April 7. However, after reviewing her defense, the President confirmed a prima facie case had been established against her.
Independent Committee to Investigate Further
A five-member committee has been set up to investigate the petitions. The panel includes legal experts, academics, and former public officials. They will conduct the inquiry under constitutional guidelines.
Allegations Remain Confidential
Though officials have not released specific details of the misconduct claims, the development has sparked national debate on judicial accountability. Legal experts say the case could reshape perceptions of justice in Ghana.
Suspension Remains Until Inquiry Concludes
The Chief Justice’s suspension will remain in effect until the investigative panel concludes its work. The outcome may carry significant consequences for Ghana’s judiciary.
