Gain Experience Before Private Practice, Dr. Idigbe Advises Lawyers
Renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Anthony Idigbe, has emphasized the importance of lawyers gaining practical experience within structured legal systems before venturing into private practice.
Speaking at a dinner organized by Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors in honor of Mr. Emonye Adekwu, a former head of Punuka’s Abuja branch recently elevated to the rank of SAN, Idigbe highlighted the value of rigorous training in established firms.
“There are few lawyers who have proper training and background in a structured system,” said Idigbe, noting that Punuka provides such an environment. He added that the firm’s dedication to excellence has resulted in five of its alumni attaining the prestigious SAN rank.
The dinner, held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, reflects Punuka’s tradition of celebrating former employees while fostering strong networks. “It does not matter whether you’re in or out. It’s a network, and we believe in maintaining mutually beneficial relationships through referrals and endorsements,” Idigbe stated.
He commended Adekwu for his dedication and pivotal contributions to the firm, including securing a permanent office in Abuja.
Punuka’s Managing Partner, Mrs. Elizabeth Idigbe, advised Adekwu to prioritize his well-being as he takes on greater responsibilities as a SAN.
“You have to look after yourself—keep fit, exercise regularly, watch what you eat, and always remember your creator,” she said. “Above all, don’t compromise justice.”
Other partners and former colleagues spoke highly of Adekwu, describing him as a committed, passionate, and resourceful lawyer.
Nnamdi Oragwu praised Punuka as a hub for producing SANs and described Adekwu as firm and capable.
Ms. Isioma Idigbe assured continued support for ex-staff members and expressed confidence in Adekwu’s success as a SAN.
Okorie Kalu lauded Adekwu’s quick thinking and litigation skills, especially under pressure.
Mrs. Ebele Enedah highlighted Adekwu’s charitable nature and commendable work ethic.
Adeyinka Abdusalam expressed aspirations to follow Adekwu’s path to SAN status, calling him an inspiration.
In his response, Adekwu expressed gratitude to Punuka and his colleagues for their support and recognition.
“I met a wonderful team at Punuka. I never left the firm in spirit; the lessons I learned there remain with me. Everything I’ve achieved is because of Punuka,” the new SAN remarked.
Other notable attendees included Olabisi Akinkugbe, an Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University, and representatives of the Idoma community, who joined in celebrating their son’s achievement.
The event underscored Punuka’s commitment to excellence, fostering relationships, and recognizing outstanding contributions to the legal profession.
