Funmi Falana’s Women Empowerment Group Threatens Legal Action Against NYSC Over Harassment Of Female Corps Member

The Women Empowerment and Legal Aid (WELA), led by human rights lawyer Funmi Falana, SAN, has vowed to take legal action against the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the alleged harassment of a female corps member, Ushie Uguamaye, in Lagos State.
In a statement obtained by journalists, Falana condemned the reported intimidation of Uguamaye by NYSC officials and a Local Government Inspector (LGI), describing it as a violation of her constitutional rights.
Falana emphasized that freedom of speech is a fundamental right protected under the Nigerian Constitution, and no citizen should face threats or reprisals for expressing their opinions on public matters.
She warned that if the intimidation persists, WELA would file a fundamental human rights lawsuit on behalf of Uguamaye against both the NYSC and the responsible officials.
The statement further urged the NYSC leadership to immediately put an end to any form of harassment against corps members and respect their rights to free expression.
“We call on the NYSC to stop any form of intimidation against Miss Uguamaye and to uphold the rights of all corps members to freely express themselves without fear of persecution,” Falana stated.
The situation has sparked outrage among human rights activists, with growing calls for accountability and justice for the affected corps member.
