Former President Robert Mugabe’s Son Arrested For Assaulting Policeman And Brandishing Knife

Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe, the son of the late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, was arrested after allegedly assaulting a police officer and brandishing a knife at a roadblock in Bubi, about 80 kilometers north of Beitbridge.

The incident occurred early in the morning at around 6:00 a.m. when Chatunga, who was being driven by a Chinese driver, encountered a police checkpoint. According to reports, the confrontation began after officers requested vehicle documents, leading Chatunga to become agitated. He allegedly shouted at the police, saying, “You are delaying us, do you know who I am?”

During the altercation, Chatunga reportedly grabbed a Support Unit officer by the collar, tearing off the buttons of his shirt. He is also accused of brandishing an Okapi knife before being subdued and arrested by the police.

Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, the officer commanding Beitbridge Police District, confirmed the arrest but stated he had limited details about the case, saying, “I have just heard he was arrested, but I am not in the office.”

This incident is the latest in a series of legal troubles for Chatunga. In 2023, he and a friend were arrested for assaulting another individual and causing damage to his vehicle. Additionally, his older brother, Robert Junior, faced legal issues last year after an altercation at a party that led to property damage.
