FG To Launch National Re-Orientation Programmes That Foster Patriotism And Unity
The Nigerian government has announced plans to roll out extensive values re-orientation programmes aimed at promoting patriotism, shared national values, and a strong sense of identity among citizens under the National Identity Project.
This initiative was disclosed in a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Press at the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Paul Odenyi.
According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu, in his New Year message, revealed that the government would unveil a National Values Charter in the first quarter of 2025, which has already been approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The Charter is part of the administration’s broader efforts to instil ethical principles and a renewed sense of allegiance among Nigerians.
“The National Identity Project outlines policies to strengthen the connection between citizens and the nation’s values, symbols, and shared aspirations,” the statement read. “It will institutionalise patriotism through seven key policies designed to promote ethical behaviour and national pride.”
President Tinubu emphasised the importance of citizens’ moral rectitude and faith in the nation to achieve the goals of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“In 2025, we will commit to promoting adherence to ethical principles, shared values, and beliefs under the National Identity Project,” Tinubu said. “I will launch an ambitious national orientation campaign that fosters patriotism, inspires love for our country, and strengthens the bond between citizens and the government.”
The National Values Charter, according to the president, will outline mutual commitments between the government and its people, promoting trust, cooperation, and unity among Nigeria’s diverse population.
Recognising the crucial role of youth in national development, President Tinubu announced plans to convene a national youth conference within the next three months. Relevant government agencies have been directed to finalise preparations for the event, which will serve as a platform for engaging young Nigerians in nation-building and promoting shared goals.
The statement highlighted the president’s belief that national development hinges on citizens’ support and collective commitment to common values and identities. “The implementation of government reforms will yield desired outcomes only when anchored on unconditional love for the country and shared ethical principles,” Tinubu noted.
The National Orientation Agency is expected to spearhead the re-orientation programmes and drive the implementation of the National Identity Project across the country.
