FG Issues Alert To Nigerians Travelling To UK
The Federal Government has cautioned Nigerian citizens planning to travel to the United Kingdom about potential violence risks following the recent killing of three young girls at a concert.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Monday, and signed by its Spokesperson, Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, the government noted that the violence has reached “dangerous proportions,” as shown by attacks on law enforcement and infrastructure damage.
Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and take precautions such as avoiding political processions, protests, rallies, marches, crowded areas, and large gatherings, and maintaining self-awareness at all times.
Recent demonstrations by far-right and other extra-parliamentary groups in the UK have been large and sometimes unruly. These disturbances have been exacerbated by the deaths of the three girls, leading to an anti-immigration sentiment, particularly targeting Muslim immigrants and people of color.
Last Tuesday, a large crowd of anti-Muslim protesters clashed with police in a northern English town where three girls were stabbed to death and five other children critically injured during a Taylor Swift-themed event on Monday. The tragic stabbing incident in Southport, a quiet seaside town north of Liverpool, has shocked the nation. Police have stated that the incident was not linked to terrorism and that the suspect was born in the UK.
