FG Establishes Committee To Verify Property Owners For Compensation On Lagos-Calabar Highway

The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has announced the formation of a committee tasked with verifying property owners situated within the right of way of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway for compensation purposes.
During the inauguration ceremony held in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister emphasized the importance of the verification process in identifying individuals eligible for compensation due to the road construction project.
Umahi clarified that properties located within 250 meters of the shoreline belong to the federal government, indicating that compensation for properties within this range would require a waiver from the president.
He clarified the committee’s role, stating that its primary function is to authenticate claims and identify properties to be affected by the highway project. Once legitimate property owners are identified, they will sign relevant documents, following which the contractor responsible for the road construction will facilitate the compensation payment.
The Minister emphasized that the compensation process would adhere to federal guidelines, with consideration given to factors such as property area, volume, and the presence of economic trees. He also noted that compensation would not be provided for shanties located within the right of way.
Regarding the total project cost of N15 trillion, Umahi stated that compensation expenses are included in the ministry’s approved budget for the project segments. He affirmed confidence in the accuracy of the project’s financial assessments, ensuring that only approved bills are considered for payment.
