Female Lawyers Call For Peaceful Resolution Of Lagos Assembly Crisis

Amid growing tensions following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, a group of female legal professionals under the aegis of “Women Lawyers in Politics” has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other stakeholders to intervene and resolve the crisis peacefully.
Speaking during a solidarity visit to the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, on Monday, the group’s President, Barr. Abimbola Badiya Jack, emphasized the need for a swift resolution to prevent potential unrest.
“As a group of women and mothers, we are deeply concerned about the ongoing crisis and its possible consequences if left unresolved. A stable and peaceful atmosphere is crucial for effective governance, especially under the leadership of the first female Speaker,” Jack stated.
She warned that if the situation escalates, it could pose a security risk that might make residents fearful of going about their daily activities.
The group’s Secretary, Omawunmi Ogungiabi, expressed appreciation for the lawmakers who supported Meranda’s emergence, acknowledging their role in breaking barriers for women in leadership.
In response, Deputy Speaker Fatai Mojeed reassured the delegation that there was no cause for alarm, as the decision to remove Obasa was backed by 39 out of 40 lawmakers.
“There is no need for apprehension. The matter will be resolved amicably,” Mojeed assured.
The development marks a pivotal moment in Lagos politics, as Mojisola Meranda becomes the first female Speaker of the Assembly, with expectations high for stability and legislative progress under her leadership.
