Felix Eboibi Becomes Nigeria’s First Professor Of Cyber Law

 

The Governing Council of Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, has officially ratified the promotion of Dr Felix Eboibi to the rank of Professor of Cyber Law. The announcement, made on October 3, 2024, marks a historic milestone, as Eboibi becomes the first Professor of Cyber Law in Nigeria. His promotion, which was backdated to October 1, 2023, recognizes his distinguished contributions to the field of cyber law and policy, both in Nigeria and internationally.

Professor Eboibi, a scholar-practitioner committed to advancing law and policy, holds a PhD in International Criminal Law and an LLM from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He was the best graduating PhD (Law) student in 2013 and the first to be awarded a PhD in International Criminal Law by the Faculty of Law at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. He earned his LLB from the University of Calabar and was called to the Nigerian Bar after graduating from the Nigerian Law School, Abuja (Kano Campus) in 2003.

Eboibi has gained firsthand experience in legal practice as the Principal Partner at J & E Legal Consult, Nigeria, while maintaining a distinguished academic career. His teaching career at Niger Delta University began in 2012, where he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Lecturer I in 2014, Senior Lecturer in 2017, and Associate Professor of Cybercrime Law in 2020. His latest promotion to full Professor reflects his deep expertise in cybercrime law, digital forensics, and related fields.

A laureate of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) in 2015, Professor Eboibi has earned numerous professional certifications in cyber security, computer and digital forensics, and forensic examination of electronic evidence. Eboibi’s areas of research encompass cybercrime law, digital forensics, international criminal law, human rights, and corporate political donations.

Widely published in both domestic and international journals, Professor Eboibi has authored several books, including the Handbook on Nigerian Cybercrime Law. His contributions to the academic and professional development of cyber law have made him a respected authority in Nigeria and across Africa. He is a Fellow of the International Institute of Certified Forensic Investigation Professionals (IICFIP), USA, and holds fellowships with the Chartered Examiners of Criminology and Forensic Investigation and the Chartered Institute of Leadership and Governance, USA.

As Head of the Department of Private and Property Law at Niger Delta University, Professor Eboibi has also been a key facilitator for the Expedited Executive Programme of the Advanced Diploma in Forensic Accounting and Fraud Investigation, offered in collaboration with Uniworld Professional Training Academy (USA) and IICFIP.

Professor Eboibi’s elevation is seen as a major achievement for both the academic and legal communities, and his expertise in cyber law continues to shape the future of legal education and practice in Nigeria.
